Some time ago, short-drama apps ceased to be a fringe curiosity. Sensor Tower tallied about $700M in global in-app revenue for the category in Q1 2025, and the US accounted for 49% of it. The quarterly figure had climbed to about $750M by Q1 2026, while full-year 2025 came in at roughly $2.8–3B. Five names drive the conversation, https://shortsreels.net/ namely ReelShort, DramaBox, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave, and anyone who has searched a store for a short reels app has run into at least one of them. On the surface, all five seem identical, offering vertical episodes, a cliffhanger every minute or two and a weekly pass waiting behind the paywall. Look underneath, though, and they diverge on ownership, pricing, platforms and extras in ways that affect what you pay and where you can watch. We ran them through six rounds, naming a winner in each, and used only store listings, company terms and published industry data as of September 2026.
The whole field fits on one screen here, before the rounds start. Prices are the figures displayed in the US App Store as of September 2026, and they vary by country, platform and promotion. Media Partners Asia estimates the market shares, which cover the microdrama market outside China. Install counts come from each app’s Google Play listing. We would rather leave a gap than guess, so where no reliable source published the figure, the cell says “not reported”. Treat the grid as the scoreboard and the rounds below as the commentary.

The incumbent is ReelShort, and it still carries the most weight. It was launched by Crazy Maple Studio, based in Sunnyvale and backed by China’s COL Group, in August 2022, and MPA gives it about 29% of the market outside China. Its 2025 revenue comes to $785M in MPA’s estimate, and MPA forecasts $1.05B for 2026. Singapore’s StoryMatrix runs DramaBox as a subsidiary of Beijing Dianzhong Technology; the app launched in April 2023 and holds about 21%. In Q1 2025, Sensor Tower had ReelShort ahead $130M to $120M, but by Q1 2026 the two were level at roughly $140M each, with DramaBox ranked first. DramaWave (often mistyped as “dreamwave”) is the youngest app here, but it already holds about 13%, and reportedly its annualized revenue exceeded $700M by Q2 2026. ShortMax operates from Hong Kong and appears to be the same app as ShortTV from Jiuzhou Culture. My Drama, the smallest of the group with 5M+ Android installs, is still the only one with Fox Entertainment as a shareholder. GoodShort, for context, holds about 6% and sits just outside this lineup. Winner: ReelShort, narrowly, on market share.
This is the round where the apps appear most alike. ReelShort, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave all sell a weekly pass at around $19.99 in the US App Store, and each one renews automatically. DramaWave’s weekly VIP starts at $7.99, and ShortMax also offers a $9.99 “Weekly Pass Pro”. DramaBox takes another route, offering auto-renewing memberships at $5.99, $17.99 and $19.99 plus special offers from $4.99. The only verified monthly plan in these US listings, DramaWave’s monthly VIP at $36.99, is the standout. Four weeks of a $19.99 weekly pass come to about $80, and that means a monthly plan at less than half that is the smarter buy for steady viewers. Winner: DramaWave, on the strength of a monthly plan that undercuts four weekly renewals by a wide margin. The number on your screen may be different, because prices vary by country, platform and promotion.
Free viewing is the topic where the marketing gets loud and the details grow thin. Per ReelShort’s own blog, the first 5 to 15 episodes of a series are usually free, and one rewarded ad opens up two premium episodes. Maintain a seven-day check-in streak and you get 100+ coins, although free reward coins usually expire while paid coins do not. ReelShort also maintains official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion, which offer the easiest legitimate way to sample a reel short drama without paying. Keep away from look-alike sites, modded APKs and “unlimited coins” generators, which are unofficial and never a safe shortcut. Only third-party guides give DramaBox’s exact figures for free episodes, ad caps and check-in coins, even if the app has free options too. The winner: ReelShort, by a clear margin.
These apps really part ways on the question of screens. Beyond iPhone, iPad, Apple silicon Macs, Vision Pro and Android, ReelShort also streams in a browser at reelshort.com, with progress syncing across devices. DramaBox’s website mostly directs you back to the app, and DramaWave’s verified presence is its iOS and Android apps. ShortMax offers web browsing too, since its domain points to the ShortTV website. My Drama plays the trump card: an Apple TV app for tvOS 18 or later, something ReelShort’s App Store listing does not show. Need nothing more than a shorts app on your phone? Any of the five will do. Winner: ReelShort overall, while My Drama takes the living room.
No rival touches ShortMax on raw numbers. The app claims 50,000+ dramas in 19 languages, and as of January 2024 the company behind ShortTV had produced more than 600 mini-dramas for overseas markets, most of them dubbed Chinese adaptations. More than 80% of the newly released content on DramaWave is AI-generated, according to reports, and the app claims 30,000+ dramas in 18 languages. When it comes to recognizable hits, ReelShort comes out ahead, with The Double Life of My Billionaire Husband and Fated to My Forbidden Alpha, both of which went viral in November 2023. DramaBox counters with an LA production team and originals such as Fake Dating My Rich Nemesis. Because Fox has committed to 200+ vertical titles over two years, My Drama has the most interesting pipeline. Winner: ShortMax, purely on volume.
This round goes to DramaWave by a distance. Offline downloads, on-screen comments and 1080p video appear in its App Store listing, and no rival here is verified to offer offline viewing. ReelShort’s cross-device sync is the next most useful perk for viewers who switch between phone and laptop. Because it varies more than the prices do, the fine print deserves a look too. Under ShortMax’s terms, refunds are not given “unless the paid product/service is unusable”, while My Drama forfeits coins after 12 months of inactivity. Deleting the app does not cancel your subscription on any of these apps, so cancel in App Store or Google Play settings instead. Winner: DramaWave.
No single short drama app takes every round, which means the best choice depends on how you watch. Best for web viewing is ReelShort, thanks to a full browser player and progress that follows you between devices. As the one app here with a verified tvOS version, and the only one with Fox-produced originals, My Drama is best for Apple TV. For sheer volume, ShortMax is best, with claimed 50,000+ dramas that overshadow everything else in the grid. When it comes to commuters and steady bingers, DramaWave is best, combining offline downloads with a $36.99 monthly plan. Best for backing the current revenue leader is DramaBox, ranked first by Sensor Tower in Q1 2026 and picked for Disney’s 2025 Accelerator class. For free, legitimate sampling, ReelShort is best again, with its ad unlocks, check-in coins and official social channels. When all five tempt you, settle on one, cancel the weekly pass you are not using and let the cliffhangers wait a day.
